Chelsea legend Frank Lampard believes the club should not have loaned Tammy Abraham out this season.

The Blues sent the young forward away in the previous campaign to Bristol City. He enjoyed a highly successful season in the Championship, finishing as their clear top scorer.

As quoted by Goal, former England midfielder Lampard discussed why he feels Chelsea made a mistake by temporarily offloading the England Under-21 international.

For Chelsea as a club, yes it is a mistake. It’s not for Tammy as I don’t think he would have played so many games. Now you see him playing regularly and he is improving as a player. Chelsea could say ‘we didn’t feel Tammy was going to play’, if you say Morata was fit all season then it is a great experience for him and he comes back next season as a well-rounded player. But now Morata is injured it seems a mistake. You can’t have it both ways.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is understood to be keen on landing a new striker in the January transfer window, with him unconvinced of Michy Batshuayi’s capability to deputise for starting striker Alvaro Morata when necessary.

I know I’ve sat on the fence there but you improve the individual by sending him on loan, but as a club now you go ‘maybe we could have kept him.

Abraham will hope to continue playing well for the Swans, and return to Stamford Bridge a better player when the season comes to an end.
